Song Review: Evangeline by Stephen Sanchez
The haunting melody of dream-like keys combined with Sanchez’s soulful and expressive vocals instantly captivates your attention, drawing you into the scene Sanchez’s lyricism portrays.
Starting off with the lyrics that lead you into the first chorus “Do you need The Sandman or a phone to call Mr Jones?” Sanchez sings about the desire to be there with or for the subject of the song in any way he possibly can. With the lines “Holding your dreams as you lie to rest” creates the imagery of wanting or needing to make sure “Evangeline” is completely at peace. The second verse of the song can be described simply as a confession of how deeply in love Sanchez is with the addressee.
Starting off the verse with the line “Somebody call the doctor, I’m a thousand degrees in love” as opposed to just saying he is utterly in love with the subject of the song. Sanchaz takes it a step further by stating he’s so in love that he’s sick. Sanchez creates this back and forth from his and Evangeline’s perspectives in the second verse by stating “And I’m sick of all the guessing between us” thus showing that the relationship may be one sided. He then continues on to say “You’re my angel in the doorway, I couldn't bear to lose you” revealing that he would do anything for her. But, he closes out the verse with an insight into Evangeline’s mind by stating “So why stay refused?” showing that maybe she doesn't feel as deeply as Sanchez does for her.
Overall, Sanchez is truly a troubadour in his own right, transporting you into his music. Whether it be poetically through his lyrics or visually through his mesmerizing music videos. Sanchez is truly a master at creating a transcendent listening experience.
